What bucket offers

Bucket is an application which allows status updates to be sent to different online services and accounts from one mobile device using sms (text). It's initial purpose is to allow those who post to twitter with a mobile phone using sms (text) messages to send updates to multiple twitter accounts from a single device. In the near future we intend to include other services such as Facebook status updates and email sending.

Getting Started

These are the steps to follow to get started with bucket. Follow carefully:

  1. Head over to Twitter
  2. Create a new Twitter account - yes, signup again with a new username - this will be your Bucket Account and must be set to protected and have no followers.
  3. Add your mobile device to your new Bucket Account on Twitter on the devices page.
  4. Come back to this site and sign in.
  5. Add your Twitter accounts using secure, safe oAuth - (including the new one) to Bucket Account by clicking 'Add Twitter Account'. During development we are limiting everyone to adding a maximum of 4 Twitter accounts in total.
  6. Select your Bucket Account - from your account list choose the one which is your new Bucket Account.
  7. Add tags - to your target accounts. You will include these at the start of your sms (text) messages when tweeting to have them posted by Bucket Account to the correct Twitter Account.
  8. Relax - as Bucket Account cleans up after you, deleting all tweets from your Bucket Account once it has filtered them.

Sending An Update

You can now send sms (text) or standard updates to your Bucket Account (to 86444 in the uk) for them to be filtered to the other accounts you've linked with tags. You can view two example tweets below. The first with a single tag. The second with multiple tags.

#a This tweet will be sent to any account with the tag 'a' assigned to it.

#a,b,c This tweet will be sent to any account with the tag 'a' or 'b' or 'c' assigned to it.

Note: The tags will be removed before reposting

Sending Direct Messages

You can send direct (private) messages to people who follow you as though they are from your linked accounts. To do so, start the update with a tag followed by _d (underscore d) to denote a direct message. Note that the _d part is required. Starting the update with just a d will lead to your message being rejected by Twitter and deleted without being send correctly.

As an example, if I wanted to send a direct message via sms (text) to the user @twitter from my linked account (@harrybailey) with a tag assigned to it I would:

  1. Check @twitter is following me (you can't direct message if not)
  2. Add my harrybailey account to Bucket Account
  3. Assign the tag h to it
  4. Send the twitter below via sms (text)

#h _d Hey Twitter, this is a direct message I've sent to you.

Twitter Updates

You can still receive Twitter updates to your phone from users you currently follow, however you will need to follow those users using your new Bucket Account and ensure device updates are turned on for those users in your following list. Remember not to allow anyone to follow your Bucket Account.

Maximum Twitter accounts

Currently you can add up to 4 Twitter accounts.

Can I reply to a specific Tweet?

Currently, no, although we have an ideas which may make it possible to reply to a specific tweet in future.
